Spring Clean Up
April 18, 2026
Join us on Saturday, April 18, 2026 from 8 a.m. - 12 noon to be part of a community effort to refresh our parks, streets, and neighbourhoods as we welcome spring.
Meet at the Parks Department facility in Southside Park, 192 Old Wellington St. S, to review safety information and pick-up cleaning supplies. Transportation will be provided to designated locations.
Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.
Individuals, families, teams and other groups are all welcome. As a volunteer you will make an environmental impact, have fun, meet new friends, earn hours, and contribute to your community.
Completing a volunteer application is not mandatory, but recommended.
Safety Tips
Whether you join our community clean-up or organize your own, it's important to be safe! Always be alert and aware of your surroundings. Do not pick up trash on roads (including the shoulder or median). Stay away from waterways.
Protective Clothing
- Gloves: Always wear protective gloves when picking up litter. Do not pick up trash or other debris bare-handed.
- Proper Footwear: Always wear closed-toed shoes or boots to protect your feet. Keep laces tied securely to prevent tripping.
- Hats and Glasses: Wearing a hat can protect your head from sun exposure. Sunglasses can protect your eyes from UV rays.
- High Visibility Clothing: Wearing high-visibility, reflective clothing makes it easier for others to see you and be aware of your location (especially when working near roadways).
Terrain
Watch your step! It's easy to lose your footing on uneven or wet ground. It can be difficult to see holes or dips in longer grass. Watch for hazardous plants (e.g., poison ivy). Avoid puddles which may be deeper than they appear.
Garbage Bags
Don't over fill garbage bags. They should not weigh more than 20 kg (44 lbs) when full. Always lift with your legs, not your back. It's safer to lift or carry many small loads, rather than one big load. Get help from others if a heavy load must be carried.
Broken Glass, Needles, Syringes and Other Sharps
Always use caution around broken glass, needles, syringes and other sharps. Never place them directly in a garbage bag. You should never pick up needles or syringes. Mark the location with a flag and report it to the City so trained staff can pick it up and dispose of it safely.
