Sidewalks
There are hundreds of kilometres of sidewalks in Woodstock, approximately 40 per cent of sidewalks are curb-faced, meaning there is no boulevard between the sidewalk and the curb.
Sidewalk Maintenance
Sidewalk deficiencies are reviewed annually and are prioritized in accordance with our maintenance program and provincial legislation. Not all cracked sidewalks require repair, for example, hairline cracks that do not pose a trip hazard.
To report a trip hazard, please call the Public Works Department at 519-539-2382 ext. 3104 or 3102 to have the sidewalk reviewed by staff and placed on a list for future repairs.
Snow and Ice Clearing
Snow clearing is a team effort! The City handles the clearing of roadways while residents and businesses are responsible for clearing the sidewalks around their property. The bylaw requires property owners to:
- Remove snow and ice from sidewalks within 24 hours of the last snowfall. (Section 513.3.1)
- All properties in the downtown core must clear snow and ice from the sidewalks fronting their establishment between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. (Section 513.3.2)
Residents and businesses with uncleared sidewalks 24 hours after the last snowfall will receive a notice to clear snow and ice. If still uncleared, a contractor will be hired to clear the sidewalk with the cost added to the tax bill.
If a road plow has pushed snow back on the sidewalk, Public Works will clear the snow once all roads have been plowed.
For more information, read the Snow and Ice Removal Bylaw.
Reporting a Problem
If you wish to report a sidewalk that has not been cleared 24 hours after the end of a snowstorm event, call 519-539-2382 ext. 3104 or 3102. Please be sure to leave the following information for an investigation to begin:
- Your full name
- Your address
- Your phone number
- The address where the sidewalk has not been cleared
Snow Buddies
Each winter, our Snow Buddies program helps connect volunteers with residents who are unable to clear their own sidewalks. Becoming a Snow Buddy is a great way to earn volunteer hours while helping out your neighbours. Buddies must be 12 years of age or older and must participate in a free training session hosted by the City.
Applications for support clearing sidewalks are closed, as we do not have enough buddies available to help everyone who needs help. If you are interested in volunteering or offering low-cost snow clearing to those in need, please register online through the Snow Buddies Form or by calling 519-421-7665.
