Cycling

Master Plan

The City of Woodstock is committed to improving cycling in Woodstock. A master plan has been developed, which sets out a network of on and off-road cycling routes aimed at creating:

  • Utilitarian connections to get to and from work and schools,
  • Connections to key destinations within the community, such as libraries, shopping facilities, municipal offices, leisure facilities, etc., and
  • Connections to surrounding municipalities, including key cycling destinations.

Specific information about the master plan can be found on thePlans, Reports and Studies page.

Types of Bike Lanes

All types of bike lanes in Woodstock are marked with bike route signs. The signs will inform cyclists when a route starts, changes and ends. Cyclists using these lanes should always travel in the same direction as traffic.

Dedicated Bike Lanes

A lane that runs along the road that is dedicated solely to cyclists. Identifiable by a white line with painted white bicycle symbols and a bike route sign. Vehicles are only allowed to pass through a dedicated bike lane when making a turn.

Shared Bike Lanes

A lane for cycling and parking vehicles. Shared bike lanes are marked with bike route signs but lack white painted bicycle markings. Cyclists using these lanes should watch for parked cars.

Signed Bike Lanes

Many roads in Woodstock have been designed as bike routes. Cyclists and drivers will share the road as there is no dedicated cycling lane.

Tips for Cyclists

Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation (MTO) offers the following cycling safety tips:

  • Always wear a helmet – it is the law for anyone under the age of 18.
  • Children under 10 are allowed to ride on the sidewalk – but watch for pedestrians.
  • Wear bright clothes so drivers can see you better.
  • Ride in the same direction as traffic.
  • Use hand signals when turning or stopping to let drivers know what you are going to do next.
  • Always stop at stop signs and red lights.
  • Stop for school buses when their red lights are flashing.
  • Look in all directions before entering a road to make sure the road is clear.

By using caution and following these tips, together we can help keep our community safe.
