Garbage and Recycling

The City of Woodstock offers curbside collection for garbage (Garbage Bag Tags), recycling (Recycling Collection), bulk items (Curbside Bulk Item Collection), brush, leaf and Christmas trees (Brush, Leaf and Christmas Tree Collection).  We also offer three different depots to help our residents deal with their waste:

Cleaning up your yard!  Yard waste may be dropped off at our Yard Waste Depot. We accept grass, leaves, garden waste (flower/garden plants), weeds, saw dust, pumpkins.  We do not accept sod, topsoil/dirt, rocks or items in plastic bags. Please remove all garden/yard waste from plastic bags and take them back with you.  There is a separate area to drop off your brush, limbs, hedge trimmings, and bushes. Please follow all signage and do not dump unacceptable items!  See our Brush, Leaf, and Christmas Tree Collection and/or Composting pages for more information on what can be dropped off at this location.

Recycling Depot

Mondays to Fridays - 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., closed on Saturdays and holidays.

If you cannot wait until your next recycling collection week, our Recycling Depot is located at the deadend of Clarke Street South.  Residents may drop off acceptable recycling materials in their appropriate bins.  You will need to sort your recycling in the proper containers on site.  We do not take Styrofoam at this site.  Styrofoam is to be placed in your garbage bag, tagged and put out on your garbage collection day.  See our Recycling Collection page for more information.

How to Place Out Waste and Recycling for Collection

By following the procedure below, your items will be picked up.  There may be times when we may miss your property.  If this happens, please contact the Engineering and Public Works Department by calling 519-539-2382 ext. 3104 or 3102.

However, if you have missed a step below, your garbage and recycling will not be picked up and you will be responsible for disposing of the materials yourself.  Household garbage may be dropped off at the Oxford Landfill in Salford Ontario or recycling to our Recycling Depot on Clarke Street South.  Or you may put out your items on your next collection week.

  • Your garbage and recycling must be placed out before 7:00 a.m. on your collection day.  You may place it out the night before; however you are responsible for cleaning up any debris or mess made by animals or wind.  For helpful tips on windy days, please visit our Recycling Collection page.
  • Your garbage may not exceed the maximum weight of 20 kg (44 lbs).
  • Place your garbage and recycling out no more than 1 meter (3ft) from the curb.
  • You must place an Oxford County Garbage Bag Tag on each garbage bag.  The tag must be visible at curb and must be stuck on the top half of the garbage bag with both ends of the tag visible. To prevent your bag tag from being stolen or ripped off your bag, it's recommended that you adhere the tag to the collar of the bag with both ends stuck together.  It is important that both ends are still visible!  Bag tags may be purchased from the Waste Management Requests page on Oxford County Website, under the approved Bag Tag Vendors list
  • If you are using a container and placing garbage loosely in your container, place the tag on top of the materials inside.  The size of the garbage bag or container will determine if you are required to place one or two bag tags.  Follow the Garbage Bag Tags link for more information on the number of garbage tags needed, the cost of each tag and which vendors you may purchase the tags.
  • Have your recycling sorted properly.  City of Woodstock residents must separate their Fibres and containers into a separate bins.  For information on sorting properly and what can and cannot be recycled, please visit our Recycling Collection page.
  • Please do not stuff your bins full!  Recycling must fall freely out of the bins.  Our staff pick up from approximately 1,500 households each day.  It is not feasible to stop, even occasionally, and pull out recycling that has been stuck to the bottom of the bins whether because the bins have been stuffed or the materials are frozen to the bottom.
  • If you find you recycle alot you may want to purchase additional recycling bins at the Engineering/Public Works Office at 944 James Street, or if you cannot wait until we are back in your neighbourhood, you may visit our recycling depot at the end of Clarke Street South. Please visit our Recycling Collection page for addition information on our recycling depot and operation hours.
  • During the winter season, please be sure your garbage and recycling is visible and not hidden by vehicles or snow banks. For safety reasons, our staff will not climb snow banks to retrieve recycling or garage bags/bins.  They must be places as close to the curb as possible.  See bullet item #3 above.

Herbie Curbie (Large Garbage Cart Pick-up)

Schedule

Pickup began the week of March 11, 2019.  The last week for Herbie Curbie pick-up is week of December 2, 2019, and pickup will resumes in the new year the week of March 16, 2020.

Please note the City no longer sells the Herbie Curbie.  You may not replace your broken herbie curbie with another style as it will not be retrofitted properly for our trucks.  Broken carts can be placed out for bulk item collection or at the EnviroDepot at 944 James Street.  Please see our City Services Calendar for when we are in your area collecting bulk items.

Each large cart requires three (3) bag tags, which is to be left loose on top of the garbage and visible to our drivers.

Wasteline

Not sure what day to set out your garbage or recycling or what items to put where?  Check out Oxford County's Wasteline App on our When's My Pickup? and/or What Goes Where? page.  This handy tool will help identify what items should be placed out for recycling, household garbage, composting or taken out to the County landfill.

The Oxford County landfill is located east of the Village of Salford on Salford Road (County Road 46). 384060 Salford Road, Salford  N0J 1W0.  For hours of operation and fees please visit the county's website at  www.oxfordcounty.ca.  The landfill is closed Sundays and Statutory Holidays.
