WAG Visual Elements 64 Virtual Exhibition
Visual Elements 64: Annual Juried Exhibition
The Visual Elements: Annual Juried Exhibition is a celebration of the triumphs of artists local to the regions surrounding the Woodstock Art Gallery. The show has shone a spotlight on the vibrancy of our creative community for over six decades and is deeply entwined with the region’s artistic heritage. Oxford’s first open-call art exhibition was organized in 1959, and led to the formation of the Oxford County Art Association. The OCAA in turn lobbied for the creation of the Woodstock Art Gallery as part of Canada’s centennial projects.
Initially named the Centennial Art Gallery, the WAG first opened its doors to the public on June 5, 1966, and was housed within the Woodstock Public Library. In time it took up residence in the historic manse neighbouring the library, and in 2011 migrated once more to the sprawling John White Building in the heart of downtown Woodstock. Today, the WAG is Oxford County’s largest municipal public gallery and contains over 1,900 artworks, close to 10% of which are certified Canadian Cultural Property. The WAG is dedicated to collecting and exhibiting outstanding works by regionally and nationally lauded artists, both contemporary and historical, as well as showcasing the works of and providing resources to the artists in its own backyard.
This year’s exhibition features creations by 35 talented artists in an amazingly diverse range of styles, media and subjects. The Woodstock Art Gallery thanks jurors Peter Flannery, Ruth Hartley, and John Hartman for undertaking the crucial task of selecting the artworks for this year’s exhibition, and congratulates all submitting, participating and award-winning artists for Visual Elements 64.
