This piece is a Vanitas still life I created for my Grade 12 visual arts class. This piece was meant to reflect human mortality and what that meant to us as individuals. The candle represents how fleeting life can be, ignited one moment, extinguished the next. The books represent how all life, like a book, comes in chapters and will inevitably come to an end. The bird skull represents the fragility of that seemingly endless freedom life gives. The amethyst represents my grandmother; it was her birthstone. Her passing helped me come to terms with human mortality.
