Municipal Election Staffing

The City recruited for a variety of customer-service focused, temporary election officials to assist with the Municipal Elections during the advance voting period and on Election Day. Only individuals selected to work for the election will be contacted.

Available Positions

Managing Deputy Returning Officer
 
  • Perform the statutory responsibilities of the Deputy Returning Officer, for the voting place where stationed, as required by the Municipal Elections Act.
  • Ensure the voting location is opened and closed within the appropriate time.
  • Responsible to pick-up election supplies including vote tabulators, ballots, etc.
  • Supervise the personnel at the polling location, ensuring that all oaths of office and certificates are filed out in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act and the requirements of the City Clerk.
  • Ensure voting location is opened and closed at the times listed.
  • Ensure that the activities at the voting location are conducted in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act and guidelines provided by the Municipal Clerk or designate.
  • Responsible to complete and sign the necessary form to make additions or corrections to the voters’ lists.
  • Responsible to download the election results immediately after the close of the poll and to prepare for return voting tabulator, sealed ballot boxes, required forms such as Ballot Reconciliation and other supplies to City Hall as soon as possible after the close of the polling location.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned in relation to the conduct of the Municipal Election.
  • Respond to personnel and voter inquiries in regard to the Municipal Elections Act at the voting location.
Deputy Returning Officer
 
  • Assist with setting up the voting station and voting location.
  • Ensure the voting location is opened and closed within the appropriate times.
  • Work with the polling clerk at the polling station.
  • Maintain the numeric indicator for the number of electors that have been issued ballots for the voting station.
  • Balance routinely throughout the day to ensure accurate ballot counts.
  • Issue ballots to qualified electors.
  • Responsible to ensure that the activities at the voting station are conducted in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act and guidelines provided by the Municipal Clerk or designate. 
  • Assist in returning the facility to the condition it was in when the poll began.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned in relation to the conduct of the Municipal Election.
  • Assist with voter inquiries in regard to the Municipal Elections Act.
Poll Clerk
 
  • Assist with setting up of the voting station and voting location.
  • Ensure the voting location is opened and closed within the appropriate time.
  • Verify voter identification and search for voters on the electronic voters list using a laptop
  • Verify voter eligibility and advise the Deputy Returning Officer prior to the issuance of a ballot.
  • Electronically strike voters off the voters list
  • Ensure that the activities at the voting location are conducted in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act and guidelines provided by the Municipal Clerk or designate.
  • Assist in returning the facility to the condition it was in when the poll began.
  • Issue ballots if the City Clerk assigns you that duty.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned in relation to the conduct of the Municipal Election.
Revisions Clerk
 
  • Assist with setting up of the voting location.
  • Ensure voting location is opened and closed at appropriate times.
  • Provide assistance to voters to determine their eligibility.
  • Determine voter’s eligibility and make corrections or additions to the voters’ list as required.
  • Responsible to ensure that the activities at the voting location are conducted in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act and guidelines provided by the Municipal Clerk or designate.
  • Issue ballots if the City Clerk assigns you that duty.
  • Assist in returning the facility to the condition it was in when the poll began.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned in relation to the conduct of the Municipal Election.
Vote Tabulator Operator
 
  • Assist with setting up of the voting location.
  • Ensure voting location is opened and closed at appropriate times.
  • Provide assistance to voters.
  • Responsible to ensure that the activities at the voting location are conducted in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act and guidelines provided by the Municipal Clerk or designate. 
  • Responsible for feeding each ballot into the vote tabulator in the presence of the voter while the ballot is still enclosed in the secrecy folder.
  • Ensuring that the ballot has been initialed by the DRO (top right corner).
  • If the voter chooses to cancel a ballot, place it in the envelope for cancelled ballots.
  • Issue ballots if the City Clerk assigns you that duty.
  • Seal the ballot box at the close of the poll.
  • Assist in returning the facility to the condition it was in when the poll began.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned in relation to the conduct of the Municipal Election.
Poll/Revisions Clerk
 
  • Assist with setting up of the voting station and voting location.
  • Ensure the voting location is opened and closed within the appropriate times.
  • Verify voter eligibility and advise the Deputy Returning Officer prior to the issuance of a ballot and make corrections or additions to the voters’ list as required.
  • Ensure that the activities at the voting location are conducted in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act and guidelines provided by the Municipal Clerk or designate.
  • Assist in returning the facility to the condition it was in when the poll began.
  • Issue ballots if the City Clerk assigns you that duty.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned in relation to the conduct of the Municipal Election.
  • Responsible to assist with voter inquiries in regard to the Municipal Elections Act. 
Greeter
 
  • Assist with setting up of the voting location.
  • Ensure the voting location is opened and closed within the appropriate time.
  • Direct voters to the correct voting station and/or the revisions table.
  • Provide assistance to voters.
  • Responsible to ensure that the activities at the voting location are conducted in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act and guidelines provided by the Municipal Clerk or designate.
  • Assist in returning the facility to the condition it was in when the voting began.
  • Responsible to perform other tasks as assigned in relation to the conduct of the Municipal Election.
  • Check voting location to ensure there are no inappropriate materials or activities on site.
Floater
 
  • Fully review the job description of all of the other election staff positions (greeter, poll clerk, DRO, tabulator operator, and revisions clerk) and be able to step into the positions on a temporary basis for relief as needed. 
Backup, Deputy Returning Officer/Poll Clerk/Vote Tabulator Operator/Revisions Clerk
 
  • Must be available on Election Day, and/or other day as assigned, in the event a regular election official is unable to work
  • Positions are as listed above and if not called upon for help, are compensated at a Back Up official rate
  • Must attend an instruction class for Election workers as assigned

  When will the hiring choices be made? Generally, hiring is finalized in late August.

  Who can apply?  

  • 16 years of age or older;
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Excellent customer service and election official experience preferred;
  • Comfortable with and/or experience using  computers, optical scan automated vote counting tabulators;
  • Ability to work well both independently and as a team; and
  • Available to attend a required training session up to three weeks prior to Voting Day.

 Remuneration:

Training Session - $50

Advance Polls - $150 per day

Election Day Polls - $200

On Call - $40

Note: Applicants cannot be a candidate or the spouse, sibling, parent, child, grandparent or grandchild of a candidate running, or a third party advertiser in the October 24, 2022 Municipal Election.
