Woodstock unveils first public art commission

The City of Woodstock’s first public art commission has been installed in Florence Carlyle Park.

The 18-foot-tall sculpture titled Wind Vane was created by artist Nicholas Crombach and features a large steel arch topped with the figure of a youth holding a weathervane.

“My intent for the Bruce Flowers Sculpture Garden commission is to connect park visitors with local history and heritage through the familiar image of the weathervane and encourage people to reflect on our past, present and future relationship to technology and the environment,” said Crombach.

The project recognizes the contributions of local artist and educator Bruce Flowers, who passed away in 2018. Flowers left a portion of his estate to the Woodstock Art Gallery for the purpose of establishing an outdoor figurative sculpture garden.

Crombach was awarded the $55,000 commission in 2022 following a selection process which included a provincial call to artists, a shortlist and public consultation.

“It is quite satisfying to see a project like this come to fruition. Crombach’s Wind Vane fits perfectly in its park setting. I am extremely grateful and thankful for all the assistance provided by our colleagues in the City of Woodstock’s Parks, Public Works and Engineering departments. This project could not have been possible without their valuable support and expertise. I will also be eternally thankful for such an important gift Bruce Flowers has given to our Friendly City,” said Mary Reid, Director/Curator of the Woodstock Art Gallery.

Wind Vane will soon be accompanied by the City’s next public art commission, which commemorates historic artist Florence Carlyle, for whom the park is named.

“Over the last few years, we have been reminded how important and valuable outdoor green space is in our community. Incorporating public art into our outdoor facilities is a great way to enhance the park experience. I cannot wait to see Florence Carlyle Park continue to evolve as a space for public art,” said Reta Horan, Supervisor of Parks.

The shortlisted artists and proposals for the Florence Carlyle Sculpture Commission will be announced in spring 2024.
