Local Robotics Competition Returns for 18th Year
Woodstock – On Thursday, Nov. 27, teams from seven local high schools will be taking part in the Oxford Invitational Youth Robotics Challenge. The event takes place at Reeves Community Complex, Goff Gymnasium from 2 - 5:30 p.m.
This year’s challenge is to build an autonomous farm robot, similar to what is appearing in the fields of southwestern Ontario. Each team will design and build an autonomous robot that will “fertilize” the different “crops” on the “farm field”. The robots will be tested for safety by obstacles in the “field”. When an obstacle is detected, robots must stop, give a sound/light warning, and proceed once the obstacle is cleared.
Students have been working in teams to plan, design and build a functioning robot. The event is described as an Apollo 13 scenario where teams receive the exact same components. Each team receives a Lego Spike Prime Kit to build their robot with no additional materials permitted. Teams will also present a written report and video outlining their learnings and the challenges they encountered along their journey.
“This event is such a great opportunity for students to gain insight into real-world applications of robotics,” said Brad Hammond, Economic Development Officer for the City of Woodstock and co-chair of the competition. “Working with industry mentors, the program allows students to use age and skill appropriate materials to explore solutions related to engineering, technology and skilled trade career paths – which of course make up a large portion of the local employment market.”
Teams begin setting up their projects at 2 p.m., with judging happening from 3 - 5 p.m. Students will then present their creations to the panel of judges from 5 - 5:30 p.m.
This marks the 18th year of the competition. Over 75 students, plus their coaches and supporters are expected at the competition. Teams will come from Oxford, London-Middlesex, St. Thomas-Elgin, and Norfolk County to compete for bragging rights.
