Woodstock Art Gallery launches sensory support kits during National AccessAbility Week
The Woodstock Art Gallery is striving to create a more accessible and inclusive experience for all visitors with the introduction of new sensory support kits.
The kits are developed by Autism Canada and are designed to help visitors manage sensory inputs so they can explore the gallery comfortably and independently.
Each kit includes a backpack with a soft plush friend, a cozy fleece blanket, noise reduction earmuffs, tinted safety glasses and fidget toys.
“Public facilities or unfamiliar spaces can be challenging for many people, especially those who are neurodivergent or sensory-sensitive,” explained Dee Logan, Education Coordinator.
“Bright lights, crowds and unexpected noises can be stressful, overwhelming and overstimulating. The items in the kit can help to regulate and engage the senses, provide comfort and focus, and reduce overstimulation.”
Six kits are available to sign out for free at the front desk starting May 27. The program is being launched in connection with National AccessAbility Week, which takes place May 25 – 31, 2025.
“We’re proud to be collaborating with Autism Canada and Oxford Community Foundation to break down barriers and support the needs of people with disabilities at the Woodstock Art Gallery,” said Stephanie Porter, Interim Director/Curator and Head of Education.
In addition to the kits, two wheelchairs are available for visitors to use on-site, and the facility features an elevator, automatic doors and accessible washrooms on every floor. Staff also follow accessibility guidelines when developing exhibitions, education programs and marketing materials.
