Posted on Tuesday January 17, 2023

Woodstock, Ont. — The Woodstock Art Gallery has been provided with the distinctive and special honour of presenting an exhibition at the High Commission of Canada in the United Kingdom.

Many Lives Mark This Place features large-scale paintings by prominent senior Canadian artist John Hartman. The nine large-scale portraits showcase award-winning Canadian authors in the landscapes that inspire them, providing a visual and literary overview of Canada from coast to coast. The exhibition will be on view from Jan. 20 and run until April 1, 2023, at the Canada Gallery in Canada House, home of the High Commission, located in Trafalgar Square, London, England.

“This special collection of portraits celebrates the richness of Canada’s literary fabric and speaks to the power of the imagination in experiencing the diverse landscape which links Canada together,” said Mary Reid, Woodstock Art Gallery Director / Curator. “We are honoured to present the work of one of Canada’s most significant artists, John Hartman, to a global audience.”

The artworks on display have been selected by Reid who, along with Mayor Jerry Acchione, will be traveling to London to attend the exhibition’s opening reception on Jan.19. The event will include a conversation between Hartman and Prof. Alixe Bovey, Dean and Deputy Director of The Courtauld Institute of Art.

The full series of 37 portraits can be viewed at manylives.art. A portion of the series was already exhibited at the Woodstock Art Gallery in the spring of 2022. The accompanying publication, which features short essays from the authors written in response to their respective portrait, can be purchased through the Woodstock Art Gallery’s website.
